Brief : This article outlines the main standards, plug types, and certification requirements for Swiss plugs, sockets, and power cords.
The Swiss low-voltage connection system is primarily based on SN 441011 (formerly SEV 1011) and uses hierarchical downward compatibility: a 16A socket can accept 10A plugs, and a 3-pin socket can also accept 2-pin plugs. Common types include Type J / Type 12 (10A 3-pin plug), Type 13 (10A 3-pin socket), Type 23 (16A 3-pin plug), Type 25 (16A three-phase 5-pin plug), Type 11 (10A 2-pin plug), and Type C (Europlug). Typical ratings are 10A/250V, 16A/250V, and three-phase 16A/400V.
Power cords must match the corresponding plug and socket in rating and construction, and meet requirements for conductor cross-section, insulation, temperature resistance, mechanical strength, and connection reliability. Products entering the Swiss market must comply with the Low Voltage Electrical Equipment Ordinance (NEV). The ESTI S+ safety mark is a voluntary certification, but applicants must submit “Swiss plug data” to prove that the plug complies with SN 441011.
The old SEV 1011 standard has been withdrawn. Since 1 January 2025, only products compliant with SN 441011 may be placed on the Swiss market, installed, or assembled.

➡️Plug Guide
The Swiss plug and socket system mainly follows the SN 441011 standard (formerly SEV 1011). It features hierarchical downward compatibility: a 16 A socket can accept 10 A plugs, and a 3-pin socket can also accept 2-pin plugs.
| Plug-Type | Common Name | Pin Configuration | Rated Current / Voltage | Key Features and Uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type J | Swiss 3-pin plug | 3 pins (L + N + PE) | 10 A / 250 V | The most common Swiss standard plug. Earthed, with three round pins in a triangular arrangement. Usually refers to the Type 12 plug / Type 13 socket system. |
| Type C | Europlug | 2 pins (L + N) | 2.5 A / 250 V | Ungrounded, round pins. Can be inserted into Swiss Type J sockets. Commonly used for low-power devices. |
| Type 11 | Swiss 2-pin plug | 2 pins (L + N) | 10 A / 250 V | Swiss domestic 2-pin plug. Round pins, similar to Type C but with a higher rated current. |
| Type 12 | Swiss 3-pin plug (legacy / current designation) | 3 pins (L + N + PE) | 10 A / 250 V | The old uninsulated version is no longer allowed for new installations. The current version has partially insulated pins. Pairs with the Type 13 socket. |
| Type 13 | Swiss 3-pin socket | 3 pins (L + N + PE) | 10 A / 250 V | Socket for the Type 12 plug. Former standard configuration, still widely used. |
| Type 23 | Swiss 3-pin plug (new standard) | 3 pins (L + N + PE) | 16 A / 250 V | Current mainstream Swiss standard plug. Rectangular body, used for higher-power appliances. |
| Type 25 | Swiss three-phase plug | 5 pins (3L + N + PE) | 16 A / 400 V | For three-phase equipment, such as industrial or large appliances. |
IP55 Switzerland Plug – New Standard
Swiss standard SN 441011(previous SN SEV 1011, withdrawal 28.02.2022)defines the requirements for:
- plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes
- multiway and intermediate adaptors
- cord extension sets
- cord extension sets with multiple portable socket-outlets
- travel adaptors
- fixed adaptors
The Swiss system is extended by plugs and socket-outlets with the degree of protection IP55.
This system is:
- dust protected (IP5X)
- water jet protected (IPX5)
This also applies to the fixed socket-outlet IP55 on the exterior house wall or in the building site power distribution cabinet.
This standard clearly specifies the relevant products for the Swiss market, thereby reliably covering electrical safety and user requirements. When Swiss plugs IP55 are plugged into suitable IP55 sockets, they offer protection against dust and water jets from any angle.
Areas of application include:
- agricultural businesses
- horticulture
- construction
- power distribution
- outdoor equipment
What Does IP55 On A Plug Means ?
IP55 on a plug means:
- IP = Ingress Protection (IEC 60529 rating)
- First digit 5 = Dust protected — dust can enter, but not enough to stop the plug from working safely.
- Second digit 5 = Protected against water jets — low-pressure water sprayed from a 6.3 mm nozzle in any direction must not cause harmful effects.
So an IP55 plug is suitable for dusty, wet, rainy, or splash-prone environments and can resist light hose spraying.
Important:
- It is not waterproof for immersion — not IP67 or IP68.
- It is not protected against high-pressure washing.
- For plugs/connectors, the IP55 rating often applies only when the plug is properly mated with a compatible IP55 socket/outlet. An unplugged plug may not maintain IP55 protection.

➡️Safety and Compliance
Safety is at the heart of our design. Each cord undergoes stringent SEV certification, Switzerland’s premier mark for electrical safety, ensuring compliance with SN 441011—the updated standard (effective since March 1, 2019) for plugs rated at 10A or 16A. This certification verifies resistance to overheating, short circuits, and mechanical stress, reducing fire risks and extending equipment lifespan. Rest assured, our cords meet or exceed all relevant EU and international guidelines for grounded power delivery.
Switzerland Power Cord Certification: SEV vs. SN 441011
For Swiss power cords (Switzerland Power Cords), both terms are relevant but distinct:
- SN 441011: This is the current national standard (issued by the Swiss National Standards Commission) for plugs and socket-outlets in household and similar uses. It replaced the older SEV 1011 in 2019 (withdrawn February 28, 2022). The standard defines technical requirements like insulated pins (mandatory since 2013), dimensions, and safety features for Type J plugs.
- SEV Certification: This is the safety certification mark issued by the Swiss Electrotechnical Association (SEV). It verifies that a product complies with SN 441011 (or the prior SEV 1011). In practice, “SEV Certified” is the common label on products, indicating approval for sale in Switzerland. It’s often paired with the ESTI (Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations) oversight.
